The Outdoor Garden
The outdoor garden was designed in 1863. The nomenclature used and the arrangement of the beds is a bit younger, but still very old. In 1898, Eichler's plant classification was a novelty. The Hortus arranged the garden according to the '40 orders of Eichler'. Representatives of each plant family were given their own section: for example, you will find a Berberidaceae bed, a Fabaceae bed, and a Rosaceae bed.

In addition to these beds, the outdoor garden also has beds of plants from unusual environments. For example, there is a dune bed with plants from the North Holland dunes, a large pond full of water- and swamp plants, and, of course, a bed with carnivorous plants. Especially for the evolution route, the Hortus has laid out a few beds with examples of plants that evolved during specific prehistoric periods.
