Cycad vitrine

Cycads are a specilisation of the Hortus. For these rare plants, the Hortus runs a special breeding program. Young plants however, grow slowly and are vulnerable. A special show case was built and placed in the Palm house to grow and display these young cycads.

Artist Marc Volger designed the cycad vitrine. Below the plant display tables, the vitrine contains eight drawers in whicht information is located about the history, origin and use of sycads. Threats and conservation actions are highlighted as well. Several artefacts and curiosities showing the strange and many-sided world of cycads are displayed in the central section of the vitrine.

Realisation of the cycad vitrine was financially supported by the ‘Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst’. Unless mentioned otherwise, all objects are from the private collection of the artists: www.marcvolger.nl.
